Ireland won a semi-final that had everything. Patrick Quinn's goal at 65:12, set up by Matt Duncan, beat Germany 14-13 in overtime and carried Ireland into the final of the European Men's Box Lacrosse Championship.
Neither side led by more than two at any point. Germany struck first and led 3-1 early on the power play, but Ireland answered with a run of three goals to lead 6-4. The lead changed hands repeatedly. Ireland led 9-8 at one stage; Germany took the third quarter 6-4 to edge back in front. Chris Boushy finished with four goals and four assists, and Justin Wismer added two goals and four assists to keep Germany dangerous throughout.
Assistant captain Patrick Corbett was Ireland's difference-maker with six goals. Conor Foley set up almost everything else, finishing with a goal and six assists. Duncan scored twice and assisted three, and Quinn's two goals included the one that mattered most. Ireland kept scoring when they had to, drawing level again and again rather than chasing.
Per-Anders Olters tied the game at 13-13 for Germany at 56:05, and regulation ended level. In overtime Ireland got the possession and the finish. Duncan carried and found Quinn, who buried it to send Ireland through.
Devlin Shanahan made 33 saves in another heavy workload, holding firm through a German attack that fired 72 shots towards the Irish goal. Ireland's edge on the ground, 55 ground balls to 53, and at the face-off dot, 19 wins to 12, gave them the extra possessions that decided a game this tight.
Winning two overtime games in one tournament takes nerve. Ireland had it. A final against Finland, and a shot at gold, is waiting.
